In collaboration with community partners, Justice High School (formerly J.E.B. Stuart High School) will host its fifth annual pyramid-wide resource fair on August 8, 2019 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 p.m. The goal is to return 100% of our students to school excited and ready to learn. Our community provides school supplies, health and wellness resources, and important information for parents to help get the 2019-2020 school year off to a great start!
History: The Stuart Pyramid Back-to-School Resource Fair successfully transferred the community model developed by the Annandale Pyramid, Fairfax County Public Schools and Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services. The third Stuart Pyramid Fair assisted more than 3,400 students with preparing for their school year by providing a community-based fair to deliver school supplies, medical assessments, clothing, haircuts, and an introduction to community resources available for FCPS students.
Need: The Justice Pyramid includes approximately 8,600 students, and greater than 67% of these children qualify for free or reduced special price school meals. Many Justice Pyramid families are struggling to make ends meet and often do not have the additional funds to purchase school supplies. Although the Justice Pyramid enjoys support from several nonprofit partners, the growing need in our community falls short of covering all students. The Justice Pyramid Back-to-School Resource Fair leverages existing community resources and addresses this unmet demand. Our goal is to make this an annual event so all FCPS students arrive at school prepared to learn!
2017 Results: More than 3,400 attendees; 200+ volunteers; 51 exhibitors; 2,640 school supply kits distributed; 200 dental screenings; 127 hearing exams; 106 vision exams; 227 child ID kits; 105 haircuts; 1,500+ children's books distributed; and 129 families assisted with the School Information System (SIS) and email. This event included representatives from non-profit organizations and Fairfax County agencies offering information about services and programs identified as top needs. FCPS staff members were available to answer questions and to distribute school supplies and other resources that promote student success.
Details: The 2018 Justice Pyramid Back to School Fair was held on August 9th, 2018, from 1-4 p.m. at Justice High School (the former J.E.B. Stuart High School). This event was open to the entire Justice Pyramid, which included approximately 8,600 students. Schools in the Justice HS pyramid included: Justice HS, Glasgow MS, Bailey's ES, Bailey's Upper School, Beech Tree ES, Belvedere ES, Glen Forest ES, Parklawn ES, and Sleepy Hollow ES.
Community Support: Support from businesses, organizations and individuals was critical to the success of the Back to School Fair. Funds were needed to purchase school supplies for approximately 2,300 students in need.
